Aerofex hoverbike is controlled by your knees

영화 ‘스타워즈’ 6편인 ‘제다이의 귀환’에서 울창한 숲 사이를 날아다니던 ‘스피더 바이크’를 떠올리게 하는 비행장치가 개발돼 화제가 되고 있다.

미국 캘리포니아주(州)에 있는 에어로팩스(Aerofex)사(社)가 ‘스타워즈’ 팬들의 꿈을 현실화한 호버바이크를 제작했다.

에어로팩스사의 호버바이크는 영화속 스피더바이크처럼 자유롭게 날아다니지는 않았으나 모하비사막에서 시행된 안전성 실험에서 합격을 받았다고 한다.

화사 설립자이자 항공우주 공학자인 마크 드로쉬에 따르면 이 호버바이크는 피치(pitch)와 요우(yaw)만 가지고 제어 가능한 순수 기계식으로 소프트웨어적인 자세 제어가 필요 없다.

즉 이 호버바이크는 특별한 훈련 없이도 조종사는 손쉽게 높이와 방향, 속도를 제어할 수 있다.
Aerofex has tested manned versions up to about five metres off the ground, and at speeds of about 50 km/h. The company is currently working on a new manned prototype to be tested in October 2012, and an unmanned version to be tested before 2014.

또한 이 호버바이크는 최대 시속 48km까지 낼 수 있으며 최고 높이 4.6m까지 고도를 높일 수 있다고 한다.

하지만 이 호버바이크는 상용화에는 아직 이른 것으로 보인다. 회사 측은 이노베이션 뉴스 데일리에 아직은 사람이 탈 수 있는 호버바이크를 출시할 예정이 없다고 밝혔다.

현재 회사 측은 이 호버바이크의 드론 버젼 즉 무인항공기로 개발하는 데 집중할 것으로 전해졌다.
