In January 2003, Frey held a press conference to reveal that she had been romantically involved with Peterson during the time of his wife's disappearance. She told reporters that she didn't know at the time that Peterson was married and that she had since been cooperating with police in their investigation.

Police took dozens of photos and made diagrams of dark stains found in Peterson's home and car. Only the smudges in the truck cab (pictured) turned out to be blood, and they matched Peterson's DNA. The fertilizer salesman told police he had cut himself on the door of the vehicle earlier.

On Christmas Eve, Peterson led detectives to his fertilizer warehouse, where they inspected his 14-foot fishing boat. In it, they found a tackle box and a rod.

Police responding to the report of a missing pregnant woman at 523 Covena found Laci Peterson's Land Rover parked in the driveway next to her husband's pickup truck. Detective Al Brocchini testified that when he opened the door of the truck and accidentally dinged the SUV's door, Peterson was very concerned and got a leather glove to hold as a buffer between the door and the vehicle. The prosecution argued that he was more concerned about a scratch on his truck than his wife's disappearance.

Police found khaki maternity pants hanging in Laci Peterson's closet. The defense argued that the wrinkles on the pants indicated they had been worn recently perhaps on Dec. 23, 2002, when her sister saw her wearing light-colored pants. When her remains washed ashore, she was dressed in khaki pants, but Scott Peterson had told police he last saw her in black pants.

The court upheld a ruling two years ago by a Superior Court judge in Modesto, where the couple lived at the time of her December 2002 murder. The money will instead go to Laci Peterson's mother, Sharon Rocha, who is the administrator of her estate. In 2004, a jury convicted Peterson, 35, of the murders of his 27-year-old wife and their unborn son. A judge sentenced him to death the following year. He is imprisoned in San Quentin State Prison. Peterson is appealing his conviction, and his lawyers cited that appeal in seeking the insurance money. A statute in the probate code prevents a beneficiary of a life insurance police from receiving "any benefit" if he "feloniously and intentionally kills" the policyholder. Lawyers for Peterson had argued that until his appeal was heard, a court could not conclude that he was responsible for the deaths. In their 25-page decision, the three-judge panel disagreed, saying that the conviction was proof enough to disburse the money. The justices noted that the defense had presented no evidence of Peterson's innocence except a notice that an appeal had been filed. "(W)e agree with the trial court that in the absence of any conflicting evidence, appellant's criminal conviction for the first degree murder of his wife was substantial and uncontradicted evidence that he feloniously and intentionally killed her," the justices wrote.
